Daredevil is a superhero appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. Created by writer-editor Stan Lee and artist Bill Everett, with some input from Jack Kirby, the character first appeared in Daredevil #1 (April 1964). The basic concept of a blind vigilante was probably inspired by the classical symbol of blind justice; Everett's legally blind daughter, whose hearing was more acute as a result, was a direct influence on the character's enhanced senses. Daredevil was the first disabled protagonist in the Marvel Silver Age and is one of the best-known blind superheroes in American comics. Daredevil is the alias of Matthew Michael Murdock, a lawyer from Hell's Kitchen who was blinded in childhood by a chemical accident that enhanced his other senses.
